Cael: Penn State s Wrestling Coach Has Enjoyed Singular Success, but Caring and Gratitude Define Him More Than NCAA and Olympic Titles

There are a number of athletes and entertainers who are known by one name and one name only – Tiger, Shaq, Pele, Beyoncé, Bono, and Sting come to mind – but coaches … not so much. Around the world of college wrestling, the list of coaches who are that well-known has a solo entry: Cael. Officially, he is Cael Norman Sanderson, 41. But drop that first name into a conversation about the sport in which he excelled as an athlete and is currently guiding Penn State to dynastic levels as a coach, and, yes, everybody knows his name. He became Penn State’s head wrestling coach in April 2009, after three seasons as head coach at Iowa State. To quickly summarize his success, Sanderson – let’s call him Cael – won four high school titles for Wasatch High School in Heber City, Utah (1994-97); four NCAA titles for Iowa State (1999-2002) while winning 159 straight matches; and earned the sport’s highest honor by winning an Olympic gold medal in 2004. Robert A. Cross On Dec. 21, 2020, Robert A. Cross of State College, passed away at the age of 79. Bob was born in Mill Hall, to Kermit Alexander and Helen Elizabeth (Welch) Cross. He married the love of his life, Jane Marie Peters. They shared 60 years of marriage together. Bob graduated from Bald Eagle Nittany High School in 1959. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1960 until he was honorably discharged in 1962. In the Army he learned Meteorology and by the time he was discharged he was teaching Meteorology. From the Army he went to work at Penn State University’s Department of Meteorology before launching a long career at AccuWeather. He began working at AccuWeather in 1965 as one of their first forecasters and worked his way to the title of Senior Meteorologist. He retired in 2005 after 40 years of service. Weather forecasting was his life and loved to do it.
