Thousands of Kaiser Permanente health care workers in Southern California and beyond hit the picket lines Wednesday to begin a planned three-day strike that their union dubbed the largest action of its type in U.S. history, while Kaiser officials insisted progress was made in 11th-hour contract negotiations.

On Wednesday, Kaiser said "a lot of progress was made" in negotiations with the union. Roughly 4,500 of those employees are in San Diego County.
