African leaders adopted the Protocol to the Treaty Establishing the African Economic Community Relating to Free Movement of Persons, Right of Residence and Right of Establishment in 2018 to demonstrate the imperative of the free movement of persons for continental integration, particularly for the effective implementation of the AfCFTA.
He said the two-day Experts’ Group Meeting reviewed the policy report and outcome of a joint study by the African Union Commission (AUC) and ECA.
Currently these flows are increasing sharply and changes in the ethnic composition of migrants indicate the development of new routes, especially from Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa.
African countries should promote the free movement of people across their borders to boost intra-African trade, says the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Director of Regional Integration and Trade Division, Stephen Karingi, calling for the speedy ratification of the Protocol on free movement of people.
