CORBIN — As the clock winds down on 2023, the Corbin Tourism and Convention Commission is hosting a New Year’s Eve Bash to attract people downtown.

Black Cat Ice Cream is taking its name literally this weekend. In what founder Alex Carter hopes is the first of many, the ice cream shop is partnering with The Pet Bistro, a customizable dog treat and food store in Des Moines, and the DeSoto-based AHeinz57 Pet Rescue to host an adoption event Sunday afternoon from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. True to the business's namesake, the event will feature three adult black cats — Mama, Baby Bean and Ouzo — as well as four multicolored kittens named Bumble, Stanley, Terri and Ivy. Carter hopes to make adoption events a monthly occurrence.

The dynamic Cedar Falls family behind the social media accounts "I've Pet That Dog" and "I've Pet That Cat" — as well as the book, "Pet That Dog!" — are at it again. Next summer, Rachel Braunigan and her son, 11-year-old Nigel Kidd, will release the family's second book, a companion to "Pet That Dog!" called "Pet That Cat!" The new book will feature quizzes, cat facts — which Braunigan said are her son's specialty — as well as tips on how to pet and care for cats. Like "Pet That Dog!", written by Braunigan and Nigel's older brother, Gideon, it will be published by Quirk Books.
