The traditional Biel Chess Festival seemed to be in danger after the city of Biel wanted to cut its subsidies. After a petition, the situation has improved and in summer the strongest "Triathlon" will continue - among others with Vincent Keymer again.
On Sunday, the 55th Chess Festival Biel opened in the Congress Centre in Biel. To kick things off, the Chinese top grandmaster Yu Yangyi gave a simul. Today the GM Triathlon begins with the Fischerrandom Tournament, at 13:00 local time (7:00 ET, 11:00 UTC). Three of the world's best U18-players start: V. Keymer, N. Abdusattorov, and D. Gukesh.
As has only just become known, the long-time organiser and tournament director of the Biel Chess Festival, Peter Burri, has died. Burri was involved in the organisation for 40 years and was the tournament director of the traditional tournament for 20 years. The 55th edition in summer will be played as a memorial tournament for him.
