LAKE PLACID — North Elba Town Council members are mixed on whether to opt out of allowing marijuana sales.
“My personal opinion on marijuana and drugs is I’d do anything to keep it out,” town Supervisor Jay Rand told the Lake Placid News on Monday.
Rand said he’s against the sale of marijuana in the town of North Elba right now; however, as the board discusses it in the future, he is not ruling out changing his mind. He said having marijuana for sale on Main Street, Lake Placid, would be “a tough pill” for him to swallow.

Lake Placid officials are mixed on whether to opt out of allowing the sale of marijuana in their village. In Tupper Lake and Saranac Lake, boards have not discussed the topic yet, but mayors say they do not expect to opt out.
A new state law legalizing recreational marijuana for adults 21 years old and over includes a provision that allows towns, villages and cities to ban dispensaries, decline to offer on-site consumption licenses to businesses and even impose civil fines for violations, although consumption of cannabis will still be legal.


“We have not had a public discussion yet,” new Lake Placid Mayor Art Devlin said Monday, the day he was sworn in. “I don’t have a position on that yet. I’d like to speak with legal counsel and our chief of police.”

LAKE PLACID — On the topic of whether to opt-out of allowing the sale of marijuana in Lake Placid, village officials are mixed.
The new state law legalizing recreational marijuana for adults 21 years old and over includes a provision that allows towns, villages and cities to ban dispensaries, decline to offer on-site consumption licenses to businesses and impose civil fines for violations, although consumption of cannabis will still be legal.
“We have not had a public discussion yet,” Mayor Art Devlin said Monday, April 5, when asked about the topic during the village board meeting. “I don’t have a position on that yet. I’d like to speak with legal counsel and our chief of police.”

LAKE PLACID — Village Trustee Peter Holdereid was appointed Lake Placid’s new deputy mayor on Monday.
The new appointment was made during the village’s annual organizational meeting, the first meeting led by recently elected Mayor Art Devlin, who was sworn in that day.
Holdereid has been a village trustee since 2011. He and his family own and operate the Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort on Main Street. He is a graduate of Lake Placid’s Northwood School.
Newly elected Trustee Jackie Kelly was sworn in ahead of the organizational meeting. The other new trustee, Marc Galvin, owner of the Bookstore Plus on Main Street, had been sworn in earlier because was out of town on the day of the organizational meeting. He still attended virtually, and his daughter led the Pledge of Allegiance at the start of the meeting.
