I was dismayed by the recent article criticizing Bread and Puppet Theater for refusing to 'choose a side' in the war between Russia and Ukraine. Bread and Puppet have taken a consistently pacifist position since the Vietnam War —  not surprising for a troupe whose founder spent his childhood surrounded by the ravages of war.  Americans are free to choose sides in someone else's conflict, although perhaps that choice has more integrity for those individuals who risk their lives providing humanitarian aid or joining up with the Ukrainian armed forces rather than sitting comfortably at home p...

What an interesting piece on Peter Schumann's continued leadership of Bread & Puppet's response to U.S. imperialism.  I found myself again inspired by how well-informed and clear-thinking he is at age 88, and I appreciated the discussion of how an artistic approach to current events will necessarily omit many of the facts while striving to capture the essence. What I did not appreciate was the author of the article doing backflips to avoid characterizing the subject under discussion, namely Russia's entry into the proxy war that the U.S./NATO prepared for them in Ukraine. In the 60 years since it began, Peter Schumann's Bread and Puppet Theater has had one consistent and very clear message: WAR STINKS! (my words, not Peter's). Which war? All wars.

Is it really “news” that Peter Schumann of Bread & Puppet Theater has a perspective that is counter to the dominant narrative? For 60 years he has articulated his antiwar vision through the theater. I am not surprised that Peter Schumann and the Bread and Puppet Theater cannot bring themselves to blame the obscene genocidal Russian attempt to destroy Ukraine as a nation and a culture on Putin and Russia. Of course, their approach is like talking about World War II without mentioning Hitler, the Nazi party, or Germany.
