There is no proposal to reduce tax on petrol and diesel as revenue is needed to ensure betterment of health services and other development works due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Uttar Pradesh government said on Thursday. 
Replying to Samajwadi Party (SP) member Narendra Verma during the question hour in the state Assembly, Cabinet Minister Satish Mahana said, "There is no proposal under consideration to reduce tax on petrol and diesel in view of the resources and financial requirements for improving health facilities and other developmental works keeping in mind the COVID-19 pandemic."

Petrol And Diesel Price Today: No relief for the common man as Petrol and diesel prices continued to soar to new highs after consecutive 12 hikes on Saturday. Petrol and diesel prices in Delhi stand at Rs 90.58 per litre with hike of 39 paise, a day after it crossed the Rs 90 mark. While diesel prices soared to Rs 80.97 per litre after hike of 37 paise over Friday’s price.
In the last 12 days, the petrol price has gone up by Rs 3.64 per litre while the diesel rate has risen by Rs 4.18 a litre in the national capital region.

Motorists in Mumbai have to pay Rs 97.00 for a litre of petrol as against Friday’s price of Rs 96.62. A litre of diesel costs Rs 88.06, 39 paise more than yesterday’s price of Rs 87.67 a litre.

New Delhi: There seems to be no respite for the common man as fuel prices across India went up for the 12th straight day on Saturday (February 20). A day after the price of regular petrol crossed the Rs 90 mark for the first time in Delhi and diesel prices too shot past Rs 80, rates were both auto fuels were hiked 38 paise and 37 paise respectively.

Petrol and diesel prices vary from state to state, due to various taxes levied by the central government and the state government concerned. In Delhi, the Centre makes up for Rs 32.98 per litre of the price of petrol, while the sales tax or Value Added Tax (VAT) of the local government constitutes Rs 19.55. The corresponding amounts for diesel meanwhile are Rs 31.83 and Rs 10.99 respectively.
Meanwhile, Petrol and diesel became cheaper by Rs 5 in Assam from Friday midnight, while the 25 per cent additional cess on liquor was also removed. The Assam government had removed the additional cess of Rs 5 levied on both the fuels last year at the peak of Covid-19 pandemic.
