A nice tog caught aboard Parker Pete’s Sportfishing out of Belmar this past Monday. This time of year, it’s helpful to keep expectations in line with the calendar. It’s winter and fishing is slow. There have been better reports on blackfishing but it’s still hit or miss. On the   bright side, the weather has been outstanding for the middle of January. While this week’s sunny skies and warm temps haven’t’ helped the ice fishing, the freshwater guys have been doing pretty well with bass, trout, crappie and perch. You just have to take your fun where you can find it.

A blackfish caught aboard the Norma K III out of Point Pleasant Beach on Monday’s trip. A mid-week nor’easter slammed into the good striper fishing. Whether the storm brought an end to the bass is a question that will be answered in a few days. But the way these fish have been hanging around, don’t bet against them. As of Tuesday, the bite was still on in Raritan Bay and along the beaches, mostly south of the Manasquan Inlet. One might expect the fishing to slow down at this time of year, yet the fish just keep on biting. While they’re not everywhere, anglers are finding them in big numbers in Raritan Bay and in the surf, mostly south of the Manasquan Inlet. At the same time, tautog fishing looks to be gaining steam, just not at a pace that’s making everyone happy.
