City Councilmember Katherine Gilmore Richardson introduced a bill on Thursday that would increase Philadelphia's tree canopy in an effort to help the city reach its goal of 30% tree cover by 2030. The bill would create the Philly Tree Fund, built using fees imposed on developers who cut down trees without replacing them, and would add buffers near industrial areas.

Academy of Natural Sciences, NOAA to partner on urban heat mapping in Philly this summer
Dozens of Philadelphia residents are set to be tapped by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Drexel University for participation in a one-day study on extreme urban heat. Each resident will be trained as a "community scientist," then given air and heat quality sensors to put on their cars to drive around the city on one of the hottest days of the year.
