Meeting Set to Explore Wakefield Park Pickleball Court Conversion

March 10, 2021
Pickleball is fast becoming one of the most popular sports around. That has created a growing need for new courts and facilities to accommodate pickleball enthusiasts. In the five years before the end of 2019, pickleball participation grew by more than 7%, while Americans’ overall activity level stayed flat, according to the Sport & Fitness Industry Association.
With that in mind, the Fairfax County Park Authority is proposing conversion of the existing platform tennis courts at Wakefield Park to pickleball. Wakefield Park is located at 8100 Braddock Road in Annandale, Virginia. The project would convert two platform tennis courts to pickleball. There are 11 tennis courts at Wakefield Park, two of the courts also include lines for pickleball. The project would run from late spring through early fall. Total construction time is estimated to be three months and the cost is approximately $140,000, paid for by dedicated funding from Fairfax County for renovations of park and facilities and the Americans with Disabilities Funding to provide full accessibility to the courts.
