Article content One of Picton’s early local characters, William Windeat was described in his obituary as the town’s “eccentric old man.” His past a mystery, he died in 1908, having lived at the Globe Hotel for many years. Always fearful of lying in a pauper’s grave, possibly he became the first person ever to purchase a pre-need plot in Glenwood Cemetery, complete with an imposing pre-need monument. Since Windeat’s death, more than a century ago, Picton has enjoyed its share of eccentrics and colourful characters. In my father’s boyhood days, there was Cuckoo Sears, a man apparently without home or family. Often seen on Main Street he was sometimes teased by small boys who knew no better. Angered by their taunts, he would chase them, while engaging in some name calling of his own. ....
