The 11th annual North Carolina Middle and High School Organ Festival and Competition, directed by Timothy Olsen, Kenan Professor of Organ in the School of Music at UNCSA, will be held Friday, Jan. 27, through Sunday, Jan. 29.
The Modern Age In this final concert of our series, we return to the Fisk Organ on the campus of UNCSA. Built in 1977, influenced by historical instruments but also the contemporary art and music of its age, it is well-suited to the compositional styles of the 20th and 21st centuries: avant-garde, explorations of tonality, minimalism, and more. Program presented by Timothy Olsen and Andrew Pester, with notes presented by Timothy Olsen
The Romantic Age In this sixth of eight explorations, we head to Greensboro to be wrapped in the warm, rich tones of the Dobson Organ at West Market Street UMC. With a heavy dose of trumpets, clarinet, oboe, string stops and a gorgeous flute harmonique, it is well suited to the music of the French and German Romantic ages. Program and notes on the Romantic period presented by John Alexander and Marya Fancey
Quirks and Quacks In this second of eight explorations, we present fun, quirky pieces that play into the more unique features of the Fisk Organ at UNCSA: funky flutes, mutation stops, reeds that wobble and quack, and more. Program presented by current students of UNCSA
