Adam Toledo's family creates sanctuary for at-risk youth in his honor

"Adam was a loving son and a good boy, who had never been in trouble with the police. Despite his parents' best efforts, he snuck out of the house the night he died, lured by older youth and the thrill of the street," the lawyers said. "Even as the Toledo family seeks justice for Adam, they also know that many families in their community and elsewhere struggle to keep their own children out of harm's way."
Adam's Place will provide a "safe and nurturing haven" in a rural setting where at-risk youth ages 10 to 14 from Chicago and other Midwestern cities can "develop skills, values, and self-worth by learning to care for the natural world, others, and themselves, away from the dangers of urban streets," the lawyers said.

Community members protest the the fatal shooting of 13-year-old Adam Toledo by a Chicago officer Friday April 15, 2021 in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood.
Adam Toledo would have celebrated his 14th birthday on Wednesday.
But tomorrow, his family will stand in front of a mural of Adam, who was fatally shot by a white Chicago police officer in the early hours of March 29 on the city's West Side, to announce the creation of Adam's Place, a rural sanctuary for at-risk youth.

Latino leaders wants moratorium on CPD foot pursuits

Pilsen Law Center’s Arturo Jauregui (at microphones) requests called on Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Chicago Police Supt. David Brown to review policies related to foot pursuits by Chicago police. He spoke Tuesday at a news conference conference at Pilsen Law Center, 1545 W. 18th St.

Latino leaders gathered in Pilsen on Tuesday to call on the Chicago Police Department and city to put a moratorium on foot pursuits in the wake of two separate chases — just days apart — that ended in Latinos being fatally shot by police.
“The recent videos release of the foot pursuit shootings of Anthony Alvarez and Adam Toledo by Chicago police officers shows a department in crisis,” said attorney Arturo Jáuregui. CPD’s “inability to protect human life during foot pursuits, and use of force, is further evidence of a department in need of immediate reform.”

Latino groups want DOJ probe of shooting by Chicago police of teen boy

CHICAGO --
Latino lawyers and community leaders on Tuesday will ask the Department of Justice to investigate the fatal shooting of a 13-year-old boy by a Chicago police officer.
The group also will call on Mayor Lori Lightfoot to accelerate court-supervised changes to policing in Chicago, end foot pursuits by officers, and to invest federal COVID-19 relief dollars to help young people in the neighbourhood where Adam Toledo lived and died.
Officer Eric Stillman was responding to a call of shots fired around 3 a.m. on March 29 when he chased Adam into a dark alley in the Little Village neighbourhood, a predominantly Latino area southwest of downtown. Bodycam video released last week shows the youth appearing to drop a handgun and begin raising his hands less than a second before Stillman fires his gun and kills him. His bodycam footage later shows Stillman shining a light on a handgun on the ground near the boy after he shot him.
