A proposal intends to improve trails in the Deschutes National Forest to the west of Bend and Sunriver

Large ponderosa pines have been marked for cutting west of Bend as part of a fire preparedness project, but conservation group Oregon Wild says they should be spared.

Beginning Thursday, some trails and roads on the Deschutes National Forest will be closed for the safety of forest users and timber operators while timber harvesting and forest restoration work continues in an area west of Bend. The roads and trails, located in the popular Phil's trails area, will be closed to all visitors, including all trail users. US Forest Service BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Some recreation trails and roads in the Phil’s Trail area west of Bend reopened Friday following a temporary closure due to logging activity in the area.
