What I think now is it spread its venom around the boat, so I kept coming into contact with it. “It coincided with me crossing the Equator. I had no shade outside where it was 40C and it was incredibly humid below deck. The sun was blistering but I couldn’t allow it on my skin.  “Plus, I had to do my daily checks, squeezing into tiny gaps on a boat that was wet and salty. It was so painful. I had to dig really deep to carry on.”

Well-wishers have lined the waterfront to welcome British sailor Pip Hare as she returned home, having become only the eighth woman to finish a round-the-world yacht race. The 47-year-old, waving flares in her 60ft yacht Medallia, was given a police escort and was met by a lifeboat and other small craft as she arrived at Poole, Dorset. Ms Hare came in 19th place in the Vendee Globe race when she crossed the finish line at Les Sables-d’Olonne, France, on February 12.
