Column: Group confronts 'historical amnesia' identifying more than 500 local slaves


In 1748 and 1749 announcements were placed in several New York City newspapers about slaves that had run away from their owners. The slaves in question, however, weren’t fugitives who might have fled north to escape Southern owners.
“Run-away on the first of November last, from John Tuthill of the Oyster Ponds, at the East End of Long-Island, a Mulatto Man Slave named Toney, aged about 19 years. Had on when he went away, a Felt Hat, a brown Camblet coat, a red Jacket and speckled trowsers. 
“Also run away in company with him an Indian Man named Jack, belonging to John Petty of the same place, aged about 18 years. Has his hair cut off. Had on when he went away an old Beaver Hat … ....

Black History Month on Shelter Island

To kick off Black History Month, NBC-TV New York’s Greg Cergol interviewed Sylvester Manor Curator Donnamarie Barnes, and East Hampton Star Owner/Editor David Rattray of the Plain Sight Project on Monday, Feb. 1.
Later this month, Ms. Barnes will be featured in a story on the channel focused solely on Sylvester Manor and its role in slavery.
Next Monday, Feb. 8 from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Ms. Barnes and Mr. Rattray will be discussing the Plain Sight Project in an online program hosted by Guild Hall, called, “GATHER: Conversations led by Black and Indigenous Change Makers in Suffolk County.” ....

A now-wealthy Long Island enclave was founded in the 1600s, and has a long and rich history. But part of that history has only rarely been explored: its connection to slavery.
The landscapes and picturesque colonial homes in East Hampton evoke affluence and a proud history that dates back to before the country s founding. But two friends from the area say there s another, more sobering story.
Many families who lived there and whose names are still associated with the town to this day were slave owners. The two friends say that the story of slavery on Long Island s East End is not one that is well-known, even though it s hidden in plain sight. ....
