Colombian defense minister defends police action during censure motion

Colombian defense minister defends police action during censure motion
2 minutes read
Bogota, May 24 (EFE).- Colombia’s defense minister on Monday defended police actions during a censure motion debate in congress, where senators and lawmakers accused him of being “politically responsible” for police violence in protests that began on Apr. 28.
The seven-hour session, which ended without a vote on the dismissal of Diego Molano, was convened by 18 legislators due to “human rights violations” allegedly committed by security forces during violent demonstrations, which left at least 43 people dead and 129 missing.
Also taking part in the debate was Juan Fonseca, who lost an eye during the protests allegedly due to the action of the police’s mobile anti-riot squad (Esmad) and family members of Santiago Murillo and Lucas Villas, both of whom were killed during the demonstrations.

Colombia's anti-government protests | Part 3: the VP topples herself

Colombia’s anti-government protests | Part 3: the VP topples herself
May 13, 2021
Colombia’s president Ivan Duque disappeared Wednesday after students avenged weeks of police brutality with massive street parties and his vice-president literally toppled herself.
All Vice-President Marta Lucia Ramirez had to do was sit still while President Ivan Duque addressed a few dozen students who weren’t taking part in the peaceful uprising.
Ironically, the VP somehow managed to fall out of her chair, all but ruining the president’s illusion that his government was still firmly in control of the country.
Everybody but the few dozen people who saw Ramirez go down witnessed an unprecedented student uprising that made it evident that Duque had lost all control.

Protesters dispersed as loud bangs were heard in the historic Plaza de Bolivar, in the Colombian capital of Bogota, on May 5 following days of protests which have left at least 19 dead. “Confrontations continue to escalate on the steps of the Colombian senate, flash bangs and tear gas have been deployed” Alexander Bare, who filmed the video, wrote in a Twitter post. Violent scenes have accompanied protests in Colombia against planned post-pandemic tax reforms that began on April 28. The reforms have since been shelved. The video, recorded on May 5, shows a large crowd of people cheering in Plaza de Bolivar, before a series of loud explosion can be heard. Credit: Alexander Bare via Storyful

Tensions Increase In Colombian Protests

Tensions Increase In Colombian Protests
Government says former guerrillas are behind vandalism and looting.
Tensions between the government and civil society continued to escalate as Colombia marked its eighth day of protests.
Shortly after thousands of people gathered in the historic Plaza de Bolivar on Wednesday, security forces used tear gas to disperse a group of protesters who attempted to enter Colombia's Congress.
The unrest has been sparked by tax reform proposed by President Ivan Duque, who withdrew the controversial bill after days of massive protests across the country. Demonstrations continued as unions have made more demands of the government, including eliminating the riot police.
