Mt. Pleasant celebrates first Black female vice mayor
Prior to integration, the region was centered around the now demolished Clarke Training School located down the road from Granberry's childhood home. Originally known as the Mt. Pleasant Colored School, the four-classroom building with an auditorium was completed in 1922, offering lessons in home economics and vocational education as well as lessons in art and drama. Clarke graduated as part of its final class in 1969 at the end of segregation. A development of homes now stands on the site of the school.
