Indy s pro sports teams find ways to welcome gamblers - Indianapolis Business Journal

FREE NEWSLETTERS Indiana Grand Racing & Casino added a sportsbook to its Shelbyville facility. (Photo courtesy of Caesars Entertainment) Millions of dollars in bets have been placed inside venues like Bankers Life Fieldhouse and Lucas Oil Stadium since mobile sports gambling was legalized in Indiana in 2019. Now, teams like the Indianapolis Colts and Indiana Pacers are trying to earn some indirect revenue from sports betting, carving out areas in their facilities that cater directly to fans who want to follow their bets while taking in a game downtown. Earlier this year, the Pacers introduced the PointsBet Hardwood Club, a sports bar constructed during the first phase of the $360 million renovations to the fieldhouse. It features dozens of tables and a massive TV screen capable of showing up to 64 games at once. One of the goals for the space, team officials say, is to give gambling-hungry fans a space of their own.

The ILA Star Compound, the official title, uses Azoff’s initials. The 5,000-square-foot space encompasses six dressing rooms, an artist lounge and three event offices. It’s part of the first phase completed for an overall $360 million renovation of the Indianapolis arena.

Phase 1 Fieldhouse of the Future Renovations Unveiled

The most obvious upgrade for fans attending games is the new scoreboard, which actually was not originally included in Phase 1, but was a late addition. A partnership with experience design company ANC, the new LED center-hung scoreboard features more than 3,350 square feet of video area, two LED rings, and underbelly rings so fans sitting closer to the court can still see the scoreboard. The other obvious update is the installation of new dark gray seats in the main bowl, which replace the original green seats that have been in place since the building opened in 1999. The green seats remain in the Krieg DeVault and Balcony levels for now, but will be replaced in future phases of the renovation.
