Five candidates vying for the seat left by former Assemblywoman Shirley Weber squared off on school reopenings, police reform and other topics during a virtual debate hosted by Voice of San Diego Wednesday night.
Weber, who was elected to the 79th District seat in the California Assembly in 2012 and who championed a landmark bill on police use of force, left that position in January, after Gov. Gavin Newsom appointed her to serve as California Secretary of State.
The candidates competing to replace her in the 79th include an ethnically diverse field of one Republican and four Democrats, including her daughter, Dr. Akilah Weber. ....
