(Images courtesy Facebook profile) A 24-year-old Black transgender woman was shot in the head and killed in Albany in what a local prosecutor labeled as a likely hate crime. Serenity Hollis was killed after a person approached her from behind and shot her about 4 a.m. on May 8 in the 700 block of West Highland Avenue. Hollis was gunned down on the same street in the southwest Georgia city where she was attacked and stabbed 22 times in April 2019. Hollisâ killer jogged away after shooting her once as she walked in the street, according to video of the homicide released by the Albany Police Department. Police were called to the scene of the shooting nearly an hour after it happened. Her killer has not been identified or arrested. ....

Police in Albany handed out $4,500 worth of gift cards in exchange for 40 guns during the four-hour event outside the Albany Civic Center, WALB-TV reported. People exchanging weapons Thursday traded in handguns, long rifles and even a sawed-off shotgun. Albany Police Capt. Benita Childs said gunowners she spoke with during the buyback seemed to be responsible people, with some saying they wanted weapons out of their homes to protect their grandchildren. (WALB) - Fireworks are on the minds of Albany city leaders. They’re looking at the possibility of tightening up regulations as to when you can set off firecrackers after city commissioners received complaints about fireworks going off within the city. It was brought up during Thursday’s Public Safety Meeting “It’s probably not a week that doesn’t go by that somebody isn’t complaining about these fireworks. I mean, I know that it’s impossible to ask anybody to stand out there with a meter,” said Albany City Commissioner BJ Fletcher and Public Safety Committee member. ....
