KATHMANDU, Aug 5: India’s ban on rice exports has the potential to deal a major blow to the global food crisis. On July 20, India imposed a ban on exports of non-Basmati white rice to control rising domestic rice prices.
Agricultural economist and NITI Aayog member Ramesh Chand has stated that India can export 20-22 million metric tonnes (MMT) of rice without any impact on domestic food security. The government has banned non-basmati white rice exports because the global demand had skyrocketed, and there was concern India could end up exporting over 30 million tonnes.
Water conservation officials in Thailand have proposed that farmers cut rice cultivation to save water as a result of bad rainfall.
Pak is expected to export rice worth over USD 3 billion dollars and the price of basmati rice has risen by 100 dollars per ton.
