It’s always tough narrowing down a list of the year’s best Houston-made albums. There’s an abundance of talent, to be sure, that rarely gets the notice it deserves. There are also just so many different kinds of singers and bands and musicians. It’s another display of Houston’s much-heralded diversity.
The past year posed a unique challenge for every musician. They were expected to balance moments of escapism and thoughtful ruminations on everything we experienced this year: dirty politics, pandemic horror, confronting racism. And it had to sound great.

Selena is getting another Grammy.
The Tejano singer is among the honorees for the Record Academy's Lifetime Achievement Award. She joins Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, bandleader Lionel Hampton, opera singer Marilyn Horne, Salt-N-Pepa and Talking Heads.
The Lifetime Achievement Award "celebrates performers who have made outstanding contributions of artistic significance to the field of recording." They will be recognized Jan. 31 during the 63rd annual Grammys ceremony.

Mariah Carey is once again queen of Christmas.
"All I Want for Christmas is You" tops the Billboard Hot 100 for a second consecutive year. It's only the second holiday song in history to reach No. 1, joining 1958's "The Chipmunk Song." And that's not all. Her remix of "Oh Santa" featuring Jennifer Hudson and Ariana Grande is also scaling the chart.

The Houston band is hosting a virtual holiday celebration featuring Christmas classics, new music and older songs. It's happening at
7 p.m. Saturday in partnership with NoonChorus, an artist streaming platform. Tickets are $10 and
"We wanted to put something together that we knew would lift up others," says Suffers lead singer Kam Franklin. "We know it's been a long year for everyone, and we hope this event brings a little laughter and joy to those that need it right now."

Ren Patrick's "Christmas Without You" was born out of tragedy.
The Cypress singer released the original song in 2014 as a gift for her best friend's mother, who had recently lost her husband. Patrick presented it to her on Christmas.
"Our families are like family. It was really emotional for everybody," Patrick remembers. "I feel like sometimes the only way I know how to communicate with people is by writing songs. I remember bringing it to her and playing it through an iPod, through the speakers of the house. We were all sitting around on the living room floor and just crying."
