republicans. so once we get these votes, we will be better able to understand just how close the race remains for governor and for u.s. senate. also expected tonight, the remainder of those mail in ballots received before election day and some of the much discussed box three votes. election day ballots that could not be run through the tabulators because of a printer problem, wolf. so what we learn tonight will give us this clearer picture of what is to come in the remaining votes in maricopa county. >> very important, indeed. thank you very much. david alcchalian is watching th numbers. what should the candidates in both the senate and gubernatorial races be looking for when these ballots are counted? >> yeah, wolf, we're digging in looking at the overall remaining to be count number. the uncounted votes in arizona. that is approximately 475,000 votes. 475,000 votes in arizona remain to be counted. so we did calculations.

any previous election. county officials have told us that we can expect somewhere around 80,000 votes to be reported out tonight. so, let's break those votes down a little bit more. what type are they? well, a majority of those will be from this large batch of early ballots dropped off on election day, what officials there are calling late earlies. you've probably become familiar with that phrase now. the rest of what will be reported tonight will be mail-in ballots received before election day. and some of the much-discussed box three votes, which you've also become familiar with, those are election day ballots that could not be run through the tabulators because of a printer problem. now, why is the type of vote important here? we know that mail-in ballots received before election day lean heavily democratic while election day ballots strongly favor republicans. we don't yet have a picture whether the early ballots received on election day, these votes we expect to learn about tonight, favor democrats or republicans. once we get those votes, we'll

those votes counted by friday. but they expect to take even longer. the remaining 110,000 we are waiting on include 90,000 early votes that were submitted before election day and those 17,000 votes that were cast on election day that were put in what is called box three because they couldn't be run through the tabulators because of a printer problem. we are expecting to get some updated numbers from maricopa county officials around 10:00 p.m. eastern tonight. this batch will include those early vote ballots received saturday, sunday, and monday before election day. and there's also a significant batch of votes left to count in pima county. this is of course arizona's second most populous county. this is where tucson is. we got an update from officials there tonight. they say there are still roughly 120,000 ballots left to be counted. and they say it will take a few days to have final results here. the elections director telling us about 20,000 votes will be

count. >> and vaughn, just to be clear, was the issue with the tabulating machine sorted out? were they able to resolve the issue and they're just concerned people who may have left when the problems were still happening need extra time to come back? >> that is the primary concern. we don't have widespread report of people leaving en masse. to be very clear, this is a small subset. across the county, about 223 voting centers, folks can go to any one. it's not like you have to go to your neighborhood voting center. they were urging folks to go two miles down the road. but the polling locations were set to close in 90 minutes and the county, to your question, they have fixed the problem. this is very minutia, but ultimately, it was a printer problem. some of these machines were not printing dark enough ink, so therefore, the tabulating machines were not able to read them. they have since fixed the printers and that's why you have seen these lines go down and this return to normal, but that has kept -- not kept republicans

glitches. >> there's a lot of confusion. a lot of people are leaving without voting. >> reporter: arizona election officials say it was a printer problem it that has been resolved, but there have been a few scattered issues around the country, including here in georgia, where two poll workers were removed today in fulton county after social media posts showed them attending the january 6 riot. norah. >> o'donnell: nikole killion, thank you. well, the country's most closely watched and most-expensive senate race is am canning down to the wire in pennsylvania. democrat john fetterman and republican mehmet oz are in a dead heat with control of the senate hanging in the balance. exit polls show the electorate is divided on whether fetterman is healthy enough to serve effectively as u.s. senator. right now, there is a bit more concern that oz has not lived in the state long enough to serve effectively. cbs' jericka duncan has the pulse of voters in the keystone state. >> reporter: as soon as the polls opened at 7:00 a.m., voters lined up ready and willing to wait.
