Paresh Rawal has done some exceptional work in his career. However, today, he is popularly and most lovingly known as Baburao Ganpatrao Apte aka Babu bhai from 'Hera Pheri'. And it is all because filmmaker Priyadarshan envisioned that character for him. On the occasion of the actor’s birthday on May 30, ETimes exclusively spoke to the esteemed director who showered praise on the actor and his process of working. Excerpts…
You gave Paresh Rawal one of his most loved and iconic characters Babu bhai in ‘Hera Pheri’. How did he come on board?
I went to see a couple of his plays and came to know of his range. The kind of Paresh Rawal that I had seen that day on stage, I had never seen him like that in films. During those days, he used to play Amrish Puri’s sidekick or other small villainous roles. When I was about to make ‘Hera Pheri’, I only had Utpal Dutt in mind for the character of Babu bhai, but he was no more. I was in search of a person who will be able to pull off such a character. As soon as I saw Paresh’s play, I was sure I had found my ‘Babu Bhai’. I called him the next day and narrated the story to him. As soon as I did, he was on board. He told me that he doesn’t care for even a penny because he has already got the character in his mind. Paresh actually played the role better than what I had imagined. The character of ‘Babu bhai’ turned his life around completely.

Prithviraj Sukumaran has recently voiced his stands on the new administrative reforms in Lakshadweep and expressed solidarity with the #SaveLakshadweep campaign. And the actor has been receiving a lot of hate on social media for the same. From certain media to people with different political views, Prithviraj Sukumaran has been at the receiving end of hate campaigns lately. Veteran filmmaker Priyadarshan has now come in support of the actor.
In his latest social media post, Priyadarshan has extended his support to Prithviraj Sukumaran and has asked people to stop cornering him. The filmmaker said that every person living in a society will have his own stands and opinion on the issues happening around and a democratic society gives freedom to express such opinions. “Actor Prithviraj Sukumaran has voiced his opinion and stands about the current problems happening in Lakshadweep. I believe he has the freedom to say that, and of course, there may be those who disagree with that opinion, and we have the freedom to disagree. But I cannot stand responding to his opinion in an indecent manner," Priyadarshan said in his post.

Comedy film Hungama 2 will release directly on a streaming platform as theatres in most of the states are shut in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, the makers of the film said on Monday. The film, a sequel to director
Priyadarshan’s 2003 hit Hungama, was slated to hit theatres on August 14 this year.
Priyadarshan is returning to direct the movie, which stars
Paresh Rawal,
Pranitha Subhash.
OTT release this year with the intention of entertaining the audiences amid trying times.
“Hungama 2 is a light-hearted film meant to be enjoyed across all age groups, and we feel it will entertain the audiences and bring some cheer in these trying times. We will release the film on a digital platform this year and movie lovers can enjoy the laugh riot at the comfort of their homes,” Jain said in a statement.

MUMBAI: Welcoming government's guidelines for OTT (over-the-top) platforms on Thursday, film personalities Ekta Kapoor, Priyadarshan and Vikram Bhatt said there cannot be creative freedom without responsibility, while producer Pritish Nandy said there was a need to tread carefully with the regulations.
Kapoor, Bhatt, Priyadarshan -- all prominent names in Bollywood as producers and directors -- said the guidelines are a "great step" by the government.

It was recently revealed in an online report that Priyadarshan’s much awaited comic caper,
Hungama 2, will hit the big screen around May and the makers are currently working on the post-production of the film starring Paresh Rawal, Shilpa Shetty and Meezaan in lead. The producer, Ratan Jain had confirmed the development. And now,
Bollywood Hungama has come up with an exclusive update on the film, which is a sequel to 2003 cult comedy,
Hungama.

Hungama 2 for a special extended cameo. He has already shot for his portion and it has been all kept under total wrap.” Interestingly, apart from Akshaye Khanna, even Paresh Rawal was a part of the first film. However, the rest of the cast is fresh.
