Largo honors its law enforcement


LARGO — The city of Largo is feeling blue and it wants its residents to as well. 
May 9-15 is National Police Week, so the city is encouraging the community to recognize law enforcement members for their service and sacrifice. 
The Largo Police Department kicked off its own internal salute May 4 when it announced its 2019 and 2020 officers and supervisors of the year.
Deputy Chief Mike Loux detailed the accomplishments of the four members, two of which had to wait a year because of the pandemic, during a City Commission meeting.

Keeler, who is now a sergeant, was recognized for his efforts as a school resource officer at Largo High School. ....

Hanford Police raise autism awareness


HANFORD — Local families were treated to an evening of fun for a good cause courtesy of Sensory Rock Gym and the Hanford Police Department Wednesday night. 
The event was held as part of Autism Awareness Month, with police estimating at least 350 attending the festivities at Civic Park.
According to Hanford Police Lt. Stephanie Huddleston, the idea first emerged in November with Officer Rolando Jaime, who works in the Problem Oriented Policing (P.O.P.) program, which was created to enhance the image of the Department through community outreach. With Autism Awareness Day having taken place on April 2, they decided it was the right month to hold the event. From there, they received signs, banners, fliers, time and funds from Sensory Rock. ....

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Daytona Beach police say they made five arrests and seized dangerous drugs during a bust at a home near Tuscawilla Park on Tuesday.
Records show the Daytona Beach Police Department’s Problem Oriented Policing unit went to a home on Live Oak Avenue to execute a search warrant that was granted earlier that same morning.

CINCINNATI — The way the Collaborative Agreement has changed Cincinnati’s policing practices gets all the attention when it comes to the city’s response to the fatal shooting of Timothy Thomas 20 years ago.
But an unheralded civic panel formed in the aftermath of Cincinnati’s 2001 racial reckoning also had lasting impact on the region.
Cincinnati CAN, which stood for “Community Action Now,” issued a series of recommendations in 2003 after studying the racial disparities underlying the civil unrest that Thomas’s killing sparked. ....
