Normally what happens is this isnt universal, but first time offenders perhaps on first time misdemeanor charges would be eligible for pretrial diverse. What that means is that person gets released by the court on their own promise to come back, but theyre deferred to the program, and when they come back to court successfully after however long and whatever things theyre supposed to do, their case will be dismissed.
