The number of Oregonians who require competency restoration services “has reached crisis levels.”
An Oregon Health Authority report has revealed the state’s need to improve how it manages services for residents who have been charged with a crime, but deemed unfit to participate in their defense. When a defendant is considered unable to assist with their case due to their mental health condition, a court can order them to receive “competency restoration services” through the Oregon State Hospital or one of the state’s Community Mental Health Programs.
