In 1911 the norwegian Roald Amundsen became the 1st person ever to reach the south pole the last region of earth that was still unexplored and uninhabited by humans. In 195912 nations signed the antarctic treaty pledging to use the beach and only for peaceful purposes and particularly for scientific research. Today there are around 80 research stations in the antarctic used by 4000 scientists from all over the work.
