The Wayne County Board met for their regular monthly meeting Thursday evening at the Wayne County Courthouse. Fairfield Park Board President Jay Fyie and Park Board member Linda Monge addressed the board seeking funding for a portion of the cost of the proposed Splash Pad at Leo French Park. Estimated cost of the project is $750,000. The Park Board had originally filed a grant request with the County Board seeking $100,000, but at last nights meeting, both Park Board representatives stated they would certainly take whatever the board saw fit to appropriate. Volunteers for a Progressive Fairfield awarded Smile awards to Reta Mathews and Carol Nale Vaughan. The award was started by the late Mayor Mike Dreith. The group plans to award it annually. "SMILE" stands for SHINE,MOTIVATE,INSPIRE, LEADS, EXCEL. Reta Mathews and Carol Vaughan had been chosen as recipients by Mike before his death. Reta and her late husband Preston could be seen working daily during summer months keeping the landscape at Freedom Park attractive to visitors of the downtown area. The Illinois Eastern Community College Board of Trustees met Tuesday night at Olney Central College. Trustee Al Henager announced his retirement from the board on January 18th, and the board appointed Roger Browning to fill his seat on Tuesday. Browning will be seated in March and will serve until the 2023 election, at which time he may seek election to a two-year term. Browning ran for a seat in 2021 and missed election at that time by about 40 votes to Brady Waldrop.
