Rhode Islanders on Thursday had their chance to sound off on a House bill that would dissolve the Providence Tourism Council and instead send funds to the Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Those opposed, which included restaurateurs and Providence Tourism Council Chair and Commissioner Alexis Gorriaran, raised concerns over transparency, independence and a lack of public input on the proposal sponsored by Democratic Rep. Scott Slater.
“The manner that this bill was introduced reminds us of the backroom deals and old school politics lacking transparency, oversight or community input,” Gorriaran said, arguing that the change would put “the majority of the money into the hands of an organization that has little interest in the diversity of Providence’s cultural community.”
