Health care bill that provides potentially life-saving health benefits for veterans exposed to toxic burn pits like the congressman in iraq and afghanistan. it had initially passed the senate by a wide margin, then passed the house which had to make a minor tweak to its language. 25 republicans then voted against the bill. they had previously voted for, blocking it from final passage. earlier this morning, we asked the chair of the veterans affairs committee democratic senator jon tester of montana whether there were any changes made to the bill that would have prompted the senate republicans to now oppose it. take a listen. there was one sentence taken out of the bill that said that v.a. could buy out provider contracts. that is it. that is the only change. one sentence. ....

Committee democratic senator john tester, republicans supported the bill first but they claim democrats forced them to oppose the bill by making changes and now it looks different. were there any changes made to the bill that would put republicans in this position? there was one sentence taken out saying that the va could buy out provider contracts, that s the only change, the only reason that was done is because it raised revenue so we had to strip it out. the bottom line, this is exactly the same bill we voted on june 16th passing with 84 votes and i cannot figure out why we passed this bill, give the benefits to folks and now we are taking it away two or three weeks later. these folks fought for our freedom and fought to keep us ....

While all this plays out, it is the parents who are left scrambling. so why? well, it comes down to the fact that just four companies control about 90% of the u.s. market for baby formula. abbott is the largest with nearly 42% of the market share last year, and in about half of the states, it also has exclusive provider contracts with wic, the nutrition program for low income families. on top of that, 98% of infant formula in the u.s. is made here, in this country, and there is stringent guidelines that prevent imports from others. a 2019 study found most major european brands generally met the nutrient requirements, but found differences in labeling issues could cause confusion for some american consumers. the fda is now trying to make exceptions, saying it will allow some formulas made outside the u.s. to be imported again, soon, but when we asked a white house official for a specific date, he couldn t say. give me a time frame on that, ....
