Ilocos Norte opens scholarship grants for HS, college students

Ilocos Norte Capitol. (File photo) LAOAG CITY - The Ilocos Norte government, through its education department, announced Wednesday that scholarship grants are now open for academic, technical-vocational education, arts, agriculture, and fisheries, as well as medicine, senior high school, and secondary students. Provincial education research assistant Carolyn Juan said that students who wish to apply or reapply in any of the seven scholarship programs may now submit their application forms at the Provincial Education Office located on the second floor of the Centennial Arena here. "Applicants are given until February 28 to renew their scholarship with the provincial government," Juan said as she reported that the provincial government has a total of 2,194 scholars, most of them are senior high school students (1,080), academic scholars (400), and art students. Existing scholars are advised to submit the following: renewal form, accomplished voluntary service form, voluntary service documentation, Barangay certification of voluntary service rendered, original certificate of grade (college level), or photocopy of form 138/report card for junior and senior high school scholars, authenticated Form 5 or assessment form as well as original and photocopy of a certificate of enrolment for those who are in the junior and secondary high schools. As one of the priority programs of the provincial government to sustain academic excellence and reduce poverty through education, more students are encouraged to apply for scholarship grants particularly those who wish to pursue technology and vocational courses and agriculture-related fields. Every year, the provincial government is allocating around PHP900 million for its scholarship programs as it aims to provide equal opportunities for young Ilocanos to land better jobs here and abroad. This school year, another scholarship grant is being considered for those who wish to pursue legal education but lack financial support. The juris doctor scholarship of the province hopes to produce more home-grown lawyers and help address court backlogs that continue to grow nationwide. (PNA) }

Law, STEM added to Ilocos Norte's expanded scholarship program

LAOAG CITY- The Ilocos Norte government is introducing two new scholarship grants next school year as the Provincial Education Office (PEO) will soon start accepting student-applicants for law as well as Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) strand. In the 2023 proposed budget, Carolyn Juan Agcaoili, education research assistant of the PEO, said Thursday that a total of PHP2.8 million has been allotted for eight Juris doctor scholars per year level. The Juris doctor scholarship grant aims to assist those interested to take up law and help in the resolution of voluminous pending cases in court. "A separate amount will also be allotted for the STEM strand scholars but the specific mechanics are still being finalized," she said. In the past two years, the provincial government has spent over PHP266 million for education, mostly spent on scholarship funds. Ilocos Norte Governor Matthew Joseph Manotoc said in an earlier statement that under the intensified scholarship program, which is now available in eight categories, the provincial government will strengthen efforts to get back the years that learners lost due to the pandemic. This came after the Sangguniang Panlalawigan approved the Integrated Provincial Scholarship Ordinance which aims to unify all the different scholarships offered by the Ilocos Norte government. These scholarship grants can be availed by those who excel in academics, youth leaders, technical and vocational students, athletes, medical students, and senior high school students. Last year, three more scholarship grants were added for students pursuing arts courses, including agriculture and fisheries, to ensure sustainable growth in the province. (PNA) }

Ilocos Norte gov't scholarship program gets P65-M in 2022

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM. Dr. Danny Daquioag, head of the Provincial Education Office in Ilocos Norte, presents on Jan. 7, 2022 the accomplishment of his office. This year, there will be more slots available for the Ilocos Norte government's scholarship applicants with an increased budget amounting to PHP65 million.(Photo by Leilanie G. Adriano) LAOAG CITY - The Ilocos Norte government has set aside PHP65 million this year to assist learners under its intensified scholarship program, now available in six categories. From last year's PHP45-million scholarship budget covering 2,047 scholars, the Ilocos Norte government has increased the budget this year to accommodate more interested applicants. Dr. Danny Daquioag, head of the Provincial Education Office (PEO) reported Tuesday that the province is currently offering scholarship grants for medical students, agriculture and fishery courses both in college and secondary levels, art students, academic achievers, technical and vocational students as well as to qualified senior high school students. In his presentation during a press conference held at the Capitol auditorium, Daquioag said "academic scholarship remains to have the biggest number of budget allocation while there are more available slots for applicants who are interested to pursue careers in agriculture and fisheries as well as in the arts program." Last year, the Ilocos Norte government has introduced three new scholarship programs which include the Doctor of Medicine with 16 recipients, agriculture and fishery courses with 80 beneficiaries in college and 216 in high school. In addition, the art scholarship program has also benefited at least 222 scholars in 2021. "For this year, we hope to accommodate more scholars under the new categories with an increase in their stipends," said provincial board member Saul Paulo Lazo, in his capacity as chairperson of the committee on education of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan. Lazo added that there are plans to propose another scholarship program for students to assist those interested to take up law and help in the resolution of voluminous pending cases in court. With a 100 percent board passing rate of medical graduate scholars, more slots are also expected for medical student applicants this year to entice more Ilokano doctors to serve the province, particularly in this time of the prolonged pandemic.
