DICT vows to prioritize free public Wi-Fi revival

MANILA - Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary Ivan John Uy on Friday vowed to renew and reactivate the "dead" free Wi-Fi service areas in three months. During the House of Representatives appropriations committee hearing on DICT's proposed budget of PHP 7.2 billion for 2023, Uy disclosed that the department's Free Wi-Fi for All - Free Public Internet Access Program is no longer operational in many locations. "I was aghast when I found out that most areas have terminated their (free Wi-Fi) services as of Aug. 31, 2021," he said. "And there was no effort at all to renew those (sic) connectivity." Aside from reviving the connectivity of the free public Wi-Fi in certain areas, Uy also proposed to create a streamlined system to ease the burden of renewal of subscriptions to free Wi-Fi service providers. Free Wi-Fi improves net access in 217 Eastern Visayas sites

(File photo) TACLOBAN CITY - Free public Wi-Fi has been installed in 217 sites in Eastern Visayas in the past four years, prioritizing health facilities and Covid-19 vaccination sites, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) said on Tuesday. In 2021 alone, the DICT has spent at least PHP26.8 million to carry out the project in the region's six provinces, responding to growing demand for connectivity, DICT Eastern Visayas Regional Director Felix Tabanao Jr. said. Of the 217 sites covered by the free Wi-Fi project, 120 are in Leyte, 41 in Southern Leyte, 37 in Eastern Samar, 12 in Biliran, six in Samar, and one in Northern Samar.
