Najib's 1MDB, SRC trials postponed, lawyer isolated due to close contact with Covid-19 patients

KUALA LUMPUR: The RM2.2bil 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MBD) trial involving former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, which was initially scheduled to resume on Monday (May 3), has been put off due to Covid-19.
One of the lawyers in Najib's defence team, Muhammad Farhan Muhammad Shafee, confirmed that the trial had to be postponed.
He said Najib's appeal in the RM42mil SRC International Sdn Bhd case at the Court of Appeal was also affected.
"Both the SRC appeal and the 1MDB trial had to be vacated this week because a key member of our team has to be tested and quarantined due to close contact with a number of confirmed Covid-19 patients.

Najib's 1MDB trial to resume next Monday (May 3)

KUALA LUMPUR: The RM2.28bil 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) trial involving Datuk Seri Najib Razak will resume on Monday (May 3) after a short break to give way to the SRC International Sdn Bhd appeal.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Akram Gharib confirmed that the hearing before High Court judge Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah will go on for two days next week, May 3 and May 4.
He said former 1MDB CEO Mohd Hazem Abd Rahman, who is the 10th prosecution witness, would continue his testimony on the stand.
The trial was put on hold as Najib's appeal against his conviction and sentence in the SRC International case was being heard at the Court of Appeal beginning April 5.

Rosmah, lawyers 'saddened' that High Court did not reveal grounds for decision to enter defence

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 18): Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor and her lawyers are unhappy that the High Court had ordered her to enter her defence for her solar graft case, saying it did not provide any grounds for its decision.
Datuk Jagjit Singh, who leads her legal team, said she is emotionally upset and distressed with the decision.
“The defence team is saddened that his lordship did not give reasons in his decision to call her defence. We do not know the thinking of the court and at best we can only speculate on the court's decision.
“We respect the court's decision but this [not providing the grounds] is something we voice with great concern,” the senior lawyer who appears with Datuk Akberdin Abdul Kader said.

KUALA LUMPUR (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - Former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak had applied to the United States court to obtain the names of 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) officials who were bribed by a former partner of Goldman Sachs Group in Asia.
His lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah said their names would help the defence prove that the prosecution witnesses lacked credibility and were merely instruments of fugitive financier Low Taek Jho, the Kuala Lumpur High Court was told. Low, who was perceived to be the mastermind behind the 1MDB scandal, has been in hiding since 2016.
Najib, who faces 42 counts of corruption and money laundering related to the 1MDB scandal, is currently being tried for four criminal charges in bribery totalling RM2.28 billion (S$746.8 million) and 21 other charges of money laundering involving the same amount. He was convicted on seven charges by the Malaysian High Court in July 2020. He is appealing his conviction.

Ex-Mara Inc chief pleads not guilty

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Mara Incorporated Sdn Bhd (Mara Inc) chairman Datuk Mohammad Lan Allani has claimed trial at two Sessions Court here to 22 counts of corruption and money laundering amounting to RM20.45mil involving the purchase of a property in Australia.
He pleaded not guilty to all the charges, which were read out separately before judges Azura Alwi and Rozina Ayob here yesterday.
