<p>Researchers in China have found out how nutrient depletion in pregnant mothers is sensed by the growing embryo to trigger a pause in their development. This process, known as diapause, is used by over 100 mammalian species and occurs in times of environmental stress. The study, published in Development, provides new insights into how diapause is controlled and could guide future improvements to infertility treatments, such as embryo freezing.</p>
