Afternoon and evening. behind me, you ll notice all of these businesses are closed. we even have some businesses that boarded up their windows because we do expect 70-mile-an-hour gusts later today. remember, this is a sunday afternoon in lafayette. even though we see a bit of traffic, people are moving along, this is quiet life for a weekend here. many people are heeding the warning. we talked to local businesses and they are closing at noon today at the very latest here local time. so we re mainly seeing the last of everybody kind of gathering what they need before hovering down for hunkering down for the rest of today and tomorrow. i ve been watching radar quite closely. you re noticing the eyewall almost making on land, nearnd grand aisle and golden meadow. you notice the dirty side of the storm which is the northeastern quadrant, that s where they re getting the most rain and the heaviest wind impact. you look at shell beach, just ....

The potential storm surges, the peak is literally water, you know, above the ground and up your pant leg. that s devastating. that s unsurvivable. before i let you go, this tornado watch in effect until 7:00 p.m. tonight, mind you for parts of alabama, louisiana, mississippi, that is a very expansive watch. what is your assessment of the threat of tornados? yeah, christi, quick spin-ups. they are fast. you take the direction of motion and kind of draw quadrants like that. 90% of the tornados are in this quadrant here. that s where you are going to see the threat for quick spin-up tornados. you look at these individual cells. any one of those could produce one of those tornados. think how far away that is from the center. that gives you the idea that the impact isn t just about that center part. it s expansive. so many people need to be ready and watch out for the warnings. they are going to be putting ....

Pressure s falling rapidly and the winds are at 125 in the southeast quadrant. they re going to work their way around to the northeast quadrant. we expect a category 3 any minute now come from the hurricane center and the hurricane hurnlts in the east of the quadrant. we expect it to go to cat 3 probably within the next five or ten minutes, as soon as they get up in the quadrant we ll probably have category 3. the hurricane looks like it s extremely powerful now and we re going to have a category 4, a strong category 4 as it makes its way to the southeast coast. right now we re going to be very close to, you know, to western eyewall as we get into the late morning we expect it here in houma and the area need to the coast, we expect winds gusting at 150 miles an hour as we get towards sunrise. storm surge, 15 a to 17 feet ....

Until they spread to the north. by then it will be the hurricane-force winds. very concerned now if we see at 8:00 the national hurricane center just edges it ever so slightly to the east as it did in the 5:00 p.m., because in the 5:00 p.m. we found the center of the storm had wobbled somewhat. you change that pinpoints of where its center is, it changes where landfall is in the track. look at the eastern eyewall. makes its way very close over metro new orleans. those are where the winds are the fastest. could see winds obviously over 110 miles per hour. and gusts could be possibly even higher than that. they move inward. you have winds well north in parts of northern areas of the state, in toward tennessee. two models, pretty good agreement. european s slower. this is 1:00 p.m. central time. if we always talk about those strong winds, it s that northeastern quadrant because you take the speed of the wind and you add its forward movement. so you have 110 mile-per-hour winds, you add te ....

People have been making comparisons to katrina with this particular storm. here s the thing. this is where katrina was at landfall, just to the east of new orleans. that s important and i ll explain in a minute. it made landfall at 125 miles per hour. it was a category 3 at landfall. i ida s forecast is expected to be 4. not only strong but to the west. particularly speaking the worst area when a hurricane comes in is the northeast quadrant by shifting to the left, it puts new orleans in a less stable position than they were compared to katrina. storm surge is still the biggest factor along the coast. 10 to 15 feet in this pink area. 7 to 11 in the purple. that does include the city of biloxi. the outer bands will begin today. if you were planning to leave. if you were planning to board up your home, do it today. do not wait until tomorrow. heavy rain is concentrated over the gulf coast. 10, 12, 15 inches of rain not ....
