Here s the latest from the national hurricaine center. a strong category 3, winds sustained 120-miles-per-hour, gusts near 160, but i would say it s pretty safe to say that the bulk of the strongest storms are strongest winds are just offshore. needless to say, they re still getting very strong winds, strong gusty winds especially with some of the rain bands moving through the melbourne region, titusville, st. augustine, into daytona beach, or just south of that region and you can see the movement northwest at 14-miles-per-hour. let s talk a little bit about this storm surge threat and this is the latest numbers from the national hurricaine center. you can see from melbourne, the space coast, to jacksonville, and savannah, that bend between florida, georgia, and south carolina, that s where we expect the greatest surge from this storm. remember, when we get hurricanes on that northern quadrant of the sea, it pushes the ocean along ....

We want to get right to meteorologist, derek van dam, in the cnn weather center. where exactly is this thing now? do we think it will move closer to shore at this point? cape canaveral is definitely in the sight of the eye wall of this hurricane, powerful category 3 hurricane. you re looking at the latest radar. i want to break this down for you. you can see the eye wall, which is about 5 miles offshore. you know, cape canaveral and the brevard county region really t juts out from the florida peninsula. that area is going to feel the western side of the eye wall, which, of course, is the weakest half of the eye wall. the strongest winds should be felt in the upper northern quadrant where we would typically see perhaps category 3 hurricane winds for that particular region. getting into specifics, you can see how the trajectory of this storm, as it continues to move in a northwesterly direction running paralegal with the ....

Approaching brevard county so we re looking for peak wind gusts of 90 to 100-miles-per-hour, so i would anticipate a lot of tree damage, some manufactured homes and mobile homes that are, you know, in harms way and roof structures and things like that. i mean, it s you know, unfortunately, when the morning light hits, if it when it does, it s really going to be when the peak part of the storm will be over the central part of brevard county. we know the wind is traveling at 14-miles-an-hour. our county is 72 myles loile s we know that eye wall, where it s hugging the coast, there s so much energy in the northwest quadrant of the eye wall that could do so much damage. so many of the forecasters have been telling us this is the first direct hit of the category four hurricane to this section of the coast in maybe 100 years. ....

Northeast quadrant, northern quadrant of the eye wall, this is western quadrant. this remained offshore all night long sparing us horrendous damage from areas from melbourne southward. it s been strong enough to knock out power probably for a couple days in those areas. houses remain standing, which is what we were afraid wouldn t happen if this had been on the coast. just a shift of 20 miles has made a world of difference. i m thrilled for those people down in those areas. unfortunately that western eye wall is now going to be very close all day long to the coastline of daytona beach up to jacksonville. just because they were spared to the south does not mean our friends to the north are still looking at grave dangers throughout the day. here s the hurricane force windshield. it s right over the top of the space coast where they had 100-mile-per-hour gusts. that s where the extreme wind warning continues and that could be extended up toward orange city, daytona beach as the western ey ....

Sustained and stronger gust tropical storm force winds. that s enough to knock down some power lines. that s enough to get those flashes and the power outages are beginning right around the west palm beep area. the core of the hurricane, if we re going to get catastrophic winds that s still located in this narrow area. this would be the equivalent of a strong tropical storm lower end hurricane. we re guaranteed to have that. we know that for a fact which would make this a minor to moderate event no matter how far or close to the coast it goes. these are our models. these update every six hour, some are every 12 hours. these are what we call our spaghetti lines. a lot of the lines were bringing this on shore around vero beach or melbourne. there has definitely been a shift. so small, 10 or 15 miles. but off the coast, the stronger portion is this northeastern quadrant. that may keep some of the really intense winds off the coast. so no longer will we have ....
