NIMHANS Director Prof Pratima Murthy emphasised the importance of caring for family members. “Our biggest asset is our families. The draft action plan aligns with the World Health Organisation (WHO) Dementia action plan and is an evidence-based comprehensive actionable document. We need to train ASHA workers and healthcare professionals on how to take care of dementia patients,” she said.
There is little awareness in society on dementia, which covers a range of degenerative diseases afflicting the aged, and is creating ripples of fear in nuclear families.
Zooming out of this case, in the larger picture too, the elderly are the most vulnerable lot in the city. Other than risks from within the family, there have been cases of robbery and murder at homes where the elderly live alone.
