Tusker trouble: Karnataka reels under jumbo loss

There is a need to keep a constant check on the sex ratio at a population or sub-population level, say wildlife conservationists. They opine that while the operational sex ratio in the elephant population can vary, the degree of difference between operational and observed sex ratio is a vital piece of information, given the rising conflict scenarios.

Wildlife conservationists also opine that the committee should also look at the death of camp elephants in the past. The outcomes of these investigations can be used to ensure the welfare of camp elephants in Karnataka.

Jumbo fatalities: Glimmer of hope, perhaps?

The number of elephants being electrocuted had also reduced marginally. As many as 11 jumbos were electrocuted between January and October 2021, and eight died due to electrocution in a given period in 2022. Between January and October this year, seven elephants were electrocuted.

MUMBO JUMBO

The increased number of jumbos being made captive and sent out is because of the rise in incidents of human-elephant conflicts, say experts. Moreover, as more elephants are being caught from high conflict zones, the elephant camps in the state have already hit maximum capacity.

Conflict control

According to Avinash Krishnan, a wildlife conservationist and director, science and conservation at A Rocha India, the carrying capacity of reserves is a pertinent issue that has been overlooked so far. There is a dearth of empirical study that can anecdotally establish that the reserves have reached their carrying capacity and thus the spillover effect has led to recent conflict and death cases.

Chorus to stop jumbo shockers gathers steam

A tusker electrocuted in Kodagu (Virajpet) on Sunday has once again raised concerns regarding the high number of elephant deaths due to electrocution. In two most recent cases of electrocution, an elephant was found electrocuted in Kurubarahundi village and a tusker was electrocuted on July 30 in Virajpet, Kodagu district.

Giant crop raiders: Farmers ring for assistance

“On average, the ETF helpline is receiving five to six calls daily. Any person living in the vicinity of BNP and facing human-elephant conflict issues such as crop degradation can call this number. Currently, we are attending to calls from a three- to five-kilometre radius of BNP. Most of these complaints are from boundary areas, as these are high-conflict zones. The helpline was set up on June 30, and to date, we have received more than 120 calls,” said Prabhakar Priyadarshi, Deputy Conservator of Forest, BNP.
