BELAGAVI/KALABURGI: The worsening Covid situation impacted the by-polls held to Belagavi Lok Sabha and Basavakalyan Assembly constituencies in Bidar district on Saturday as the average voting in both these segments dropped drastically as compared to the last elections. However, the Maski Assembly constituency (ST reserved, Raichur district) recorded 77.48 per cent.

The Karnataka High Court on Saturday said as of today it was not necessary to transfer investigations in the alleged sex CD case involving former State minister Ramesh Jarkiholi from the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
A division bench of Chief Justice Abhay Oka and Justice Suraj Govindaraj in their order said "We have perused the report submitted by Soumendu Mukherjee IPS, head of Special Investigation Team (SIT), which is investigating into three crimes, three separate reports are submitted, pointing out steps taken in investigation. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged CD sex scandal has served notice on former Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi to appear before the officials for questioning at 5 p.m. on Tuesday (April 20).
Though the SIT has questioned Mr. Jarkiholi multiple times, it was before the victim in the case appeared and recorded her statement before a judicial magistrate and the probe team. Mr. Jarkiholi tested positive for COVID-19 on April 5 and hasn’t been available for questioning since. At present, he is in quarantine. He had skipped the BJP’s bypoll campaign in light of all this.

BJP goes full throttle for Belagavi Lok Sabha seat

Express News Service
BELAGAVI: With the Congress-BJP clash in the bypoll for Belagavi Lok Sabha constituency expected to go down to the wire, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has shifted his focus to the high-stakes battle rather than his government’s ongoing fight against the raging pandemic.Besides hitting the campaign trail trice in the last few days, the CM has ensured that party rallies and roadshows go full throttle to ensure the victory of Mangala Angadi, wife of former Minister of State for Railways late Suresh Angadi, under any circumstances.
Even as the Congress campaign, headed by its candidate Satish Jarkiholi, evoked a tremendous response with political analysts predicting a tight clash between the two parties, BJP leaders are optimistic of winning the seat by more than 4 lakh votes. If the CM choosing to hold roadshows in Belagavi at the fag end of the campaign on Monday and Tuesday, and exiting Covid-ravaged Bengaluru, is any indicator, his rival party leaders said that he must have realised that the bypoll is going to be a humdinger. With the prevailing political trend believed to be strongly in favour of Satish in both Arabhavi and Gokak regions, a bastion of the Jarkiholi family, the CM held two roadshows in each town on Wednesday in an attempt to woo voters.

The byelections to Belagavi Lok Sabha constituency and Basavakalyan and Maski Assembly constituencies on Saturday come at a time when the BJP government is grappling with challenges on many fronts — management of COVID-19, strike by road transport corporation employees, and the alleged CD sex scandal involving party MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi.
Pulling off victories in at least two constituencies would likely help beleaguered Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa consolidate his position within the party and the government. Defeat in these constituencies, which have a strong presence of the Lingayat community, to which Mr. Yediyurappa belongs, would further strengthen those leading the chorus for a change in leadership.
