Extent of damage of fire on Duke Street in Barrow revealed

Seven fire crews were called to a building in Barrow’s Duke Street yesterday. They spent two hours tackling the blaze, which had spread through the unused building. A joint investigation between the fire service and the police is due to examine how the fire started. Station manager Roger Exley said fire crews from Barrow and Walney were joined by colleagues from Ulverston and Broughton due to the blaze’s potential to spread down the street. Plans making up £1m Barrow Library refurbishment are approved

Barrow Council gave the thumbs up on work on the library's entrance lobby. Plans were put forward to remove a modern screen sub-dividing the main entrance lobby and for installation of fire resistant glazed screens. The proposals also involved installation of a doorway to the library's original arched openings to reinstate the building's entrance to its earlier form. Barrow will be 'a hive of cultural activity' once lockdown is over

CONFUSION over where investment money will end up in Barrow has been addressed by councillors. The High Street Heritage Action Zone fund (HSHAZ), along with the Future High Street Fund, are both still on hold during lockdown, a council boss said. Helen Houston, Barrow’s development services policy regeneration and information officer, said: “The goal is to make the high streets such as Duke Street, Ramsden Square, Abbey Road and Cornwallis Street a hive of cultural activity of events with a pot of £1.9million once lockdown ends."
