If you ever had the slightest inkling that the outdoor lifestyle might be slipping away, you should have been at our second Outdoor Ron-de-Voux in Greenville last Saturday. Two years ago, Randy Koon who owns the Carquest Auto Supply and âFriendleeâ and who is a well-known personality in Northeast Texas, and I decided an outdoor get together would be nice. We wanted the event to be outdoors, where we could have a campfire for folks to gather, drink cowboy coffee and sample some outdoor cooking, such as Dutch Kettle blackberry cobbler and pork fajitas. Our first event was much fun, an...
5:00 Spring turkey hunting at its core seems pretty basic; the hunter goes to the woods or fields where turkeys live, mimics the sounds of a love sick hen with his call and ultimately shoots a big gobbler. While this is text book turkey hunting, I can tell you from almost 40 past springs hunting them, it just ain’t that simple! After all these many springs spent in pursuit of gobblers, I can honestly say no two hunts have turned out the same, maybe this is what keeps me coming back year after year. I recently saw 30/30 ammo going for $85 a box at a gun show, and folks were standing in line to purchase it. Iâm not talking about some specialty wildcat rounds that are hand loaded, Iâm talking 30/30 rounds, arguably the most common and widely used of all centerfire bullets. Just try to find a box of 9 mm or .223 ammo, itâs as scarce as henâs teeth. If you can find it, it might be necessary to take out a loan on the homestead just to purchase a few boxes. Even rim fire .22 rounds are tough to find, and pricy.
I often get a kick out of fooling some of my guests in hunting camps by cooking wild pork in conventional ways that venison is prepared and watching them brag on how good that venison tastes. Some of these are the same folks who swear wild hogs are not fit to eat. Pork is pork, regardless of it comes from a fattened domestic hog or wild porker. The difference is usually in the texture or tenderness of the meat. Although most wild porkers in Texas are corn fed, they have a way of locating those corn feeders set out in the woods to attract deer, often before deer find them.
