Twenty-two years ago our government, under the leadership of president Thabo Mbeki, appointed the youngest ever chairperson for a state-owned entity, and that person was strategist Sandile Zungu.

As Susan Dalgety’s article (Perspective, May 6) demonstrated, our society is now cursed by the rule of ideological zealots, of whom Lorna Slater is an outstanding example, with Professor Kezie Dugdale not far behind. Both would fit with ease into the disciplinary apparatus of the Chinese Communist Party.

It’s interesting that at Humza Yousaf’s anti-poverty summit on Tuesday he paved the way for “bold” tax decisions (for that surely reads “tax increases”) and “targeted benefits”.
