India News: SC's recent verdicts reshaped election laws, mandating CEC appointments by a 3-member panel, striking down electoral bonds scheme for political donors
The bill was introduced in Rajya Sabha by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on August 10. Some former CECs, including N Gopalaswamy, V S Sampat and S Y Quraishi, had on Saturday written to the prime minister opposing the provision to equate the CEC and the ECs to the cabinet secretary.
According to section 8 (2) of the proposed law, the Selection Committee may also consider any other person than those included in the panel by the Search Committee.
Only if practical measures to implement today’s order are put in place and can provide a level playing field, will we be able to usher in a modicum of integrity and confidence in the umpire. This is the essence of a ‘free and fair’ election.
