January 20, 2021 at 2:30pm Dozens of local artists and arts-oriented organizations got welcome news last week when ArtsFairfax announced the recipients of $567,138 in emergency relief and recovery grants on Jan. 15. A nonprofit that serves as Fairfax County’s designated local arts agency, ArtsFairfax created an Emergency Relief and Recovery Grants program in order to provide quick funding to an industry that has been devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The program comes in lieu of the agency’s usual grant programs, which were suspended for fiscal year 2021. “The impact of COVID-19 continues to have a devastating effect on the arts community, yet we have seen the arts continue to provide arts education, senior engagement, family entertainment and so much more,” ArtsFairfax president and CEO Linda S. Date Time Local businesses awarded recovery grants Grants have been awarded to more than 80 local businesses, to help them adapt their operations or develop new services in the COVID-19 era. A total of 85 small businesses will share in $411,463 worth of funding through the COVID-19 Business Recovery Grants program. The grants were included in the Council’s sixth COVID-19 Community and Economic Support Package, which was endorsed in September. Mayor Stephanie Asher said targeted assistance for local businesses was a central plank of the Council’s support packages, which have a total value of $16.9 million. “While trading conditions have improved during this busy Christmas period, businesses still face a long road to recovery,” Mayor Asher said. ....
Date Time Picton Rural Fire Service gets a makeover “Our helmets were melting, our masks were melting, and some nights we just saw red as far as the eye could see.” That’s the way one New South Wales volunteer firefighter, Gareth Jamieson, described the unprecedented and unpredictable 2019/2020 bushfires. Based in Picton’s Rural Fire Service, Mr Jamieson was on the front line battling the devastating Green Wattle Creek blaze that burned from November 2019 to January 2020 and destroyed more than 275,000 hectares of land. Together with his fellow firefighters, Mr Jamieson fought the fire for more than 700 hours, often going days without sleeping. ....

Less than a year ago, devastating fires ravaged many parts of Australia. South Australia was one area that was badly impacted. At the end of October 2019, strong northerly winds combined with existing dry conditions and high temperatures created dangerous bushfire conditions for the state. More than 200 bushfires burned across South Australia, including one major fire at Cudlee Creek in Adelaide Hills. The Adelaide Hills fire destroyed 23,000 hectares of land, 84 homes, more than 400 outbuildings and 292 vehicles, before finally being brought under control. It also devastated a lot of the area’s natural wildlife, including the koala population and their food supply. ....
