Portsmouth NH backs plan to protect Prescott Park from climate change

PORTSMOUTH The City Council has approved changes to the Prescott Park Master Plan, which recommends spending more than $3 million to protect the city-owned park from flooding.
The council voted unanimously Monday to approve the changes to the plan recommended by the Mayor’s Blue Ribbon Committee. Multiple recommended projects are aimed at protecting the beloved city park on the banks of the tidal Piscataqua River from flooding and other threats posed by climate change.
Tom Watson, who is chair of the Blue Ribbon committee, told the City Council the threats posed by rising water “will continue to be an increasing problem going forward.” ....

Common Table provides hot lunch, community care each week in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH Through bleaker times and no matter the weather, food and fellowship have been a weekly constant in town thanks to hot and hearty community meals provided by Common Table.
Each Thursday morning, even amid the ongoing pandemic, a group of between 15 to 20 local volunteers set up shop at St. John’s Episcopal Church on Chapel Street and prepare free bagged lunches for the community.
Judy Roberts, a co-chair of the group who has volunteered for 20 years, said the group, which is unaffiliated with the church but utilizes the space, sees anywhere between 80 to120 people each week in the now outdoor lunch pickup setting. ....

Leader of Chamber Collaborative of Greater Portsmouth to retire

PORTSMOUTH Like many other people, Valerie Rochon said, the coronavirus pandemic has caused her to reevaluate her life’s priorities.
Yearning for more time with her family, especially her two growing grandsons, Rochon said, “Now is the perfect time for both me and the chamber.”
Rochon announced Tuesday she will retire in the late spring after leading the Greater Portsmouth Chamber Collaborative since 2016.
Rochon sits on the New Hampshire Travel Council as well as Discover New England, a marketing consortium of all six New England states. Before joining the Chamber in 2010 as a tourism manager, Rochon was the executive director of the Stowe (Vermont) Area Association. ....
