Level rise on the coast, more coral bleaching events, reefs that are the cradle of sea life, the way the cod left the coast of maine because it got too warm for them and stronger hurricanes and cyclones as we head into those seasons as well. among the causes, could it be el nino starting early? la nina cooled us off for the last couple of years. here with la nina we were still hitting off-the-chart records. one interesting possible culprit is the shipping industry. in 2020 they changed the fuel mix of these big ocean liners, which means there s less sulfur coming out of the smoke stacks of these ships. that sulfur was reflected enough sunlight it was serving as sort of an accidental sunscreen. it might have been masking more global warming than we were ....

And this is what i ve come to see the world s largest 3d printed reef. it was made in australia by reef design lab using a ceramic material, and then shipped in small sections to be constructed underwater. took a little while for the corals to get used to the material. they grow slower than the corals. but the corals are very, very strong. a living reef is the most effective natural defence barrier for protecting the islands from erosion. 3d printing allows for rapid testing of new designs to find the best structure for growing corals. the team behind this is now looking to use similar techniques to create other reefs in other parts of the world. as for summer island, this is one of the many different shapes arjan s experimenting with and it s incredible how quickly the wildlife has claimed it as its home. his recreated coral oasis was literally swimming with fish species. ....
