Reaffirm the commitment to collective self-defense. article v of the nato treaty, any attack on one is an attack on all. that will be very clear. but what putin will be listening for, what does this mean about ukraine? what is nato prepared to do? what are they not prepared to do? and here i think nato needs to send some very serious messages to putin, particularly about civilian casualties and about reframing from the use of any nuclear or chemical or biological weapons. obviously it s so important not only because of the tragedy that could occur, but i also wonder about the desperation we re seeing. as many on the ground have described, they re not fighting troop. they are attacking civilians. it says if he doesn t have the russian military preparedness, obviously should have been there had he wanted to engage in this horrible unjustified engagement, it suggests that he was unprepared and therefore desperate going forward. if he is desperate, does that ....

And sky news is in the west of ukraine. from there our reporter brought us up to date a little earlier on. it is perhaps a face-saving exercise for vladimir putin and russian forces more than anything. we ll have to see what this reframing of their objectives really means on the ground. but certainly, it does suggest a real shift when they invaded a month ago, the objective was to take ukraine, to topple the government, and to take the capital, and none of those things have happened in the last month. russian troops really are under immense strain, and many parts of the country. so now, to reframe their objective, of so-called liberating the eastern region of donbas is a much more realistic target for russian forces, who suffered huge losses in many areas. but we must remember that it is hard to believe what russia says. let s not forget they vowed they weren t going to invade ukraine. ....

Conflict. people here in ukraine, they are exhausted, they see this happening around them and they are living with this constant sense of not knowing what is going to come next. they are also driven by this real sense of patriotism, they have seen the ukrainian forces doing well, they have seen them repelling rest on several fronts so they are feeling buoyed by that, absolutely. in terms of trying to predict what happens next, it is so difficult. i think you feel as well, your last guest reflected on this, you feel it is changing direction but depending on how things go here, things were successful, the outcome might be one thing but because they are less successful the outcome potential outcome that is being sold to the russian people and to the world is perhaps slightly different as a result of that. in perhaps slightly different as a result of that. perhaps slightly different as a result of that. . , . , , ., ., result of that. in many ways you are sa in: result of that. in many w ....

Chile. joining me from lviv in western ukraine where many ukrainians are settled. what is russia s change in strategy mean for the war? reporter: it s perhaps a face-saving exercise for vladimir putin and russian forces more than anything. we will have to see what the reframing of their objectives really means oak. but certainly it does suggest a real shift, when they invaded a month ago, the objective whereas to take ukraine to top him the government and to take the capital. none of those things have happened, russian troops are under immense strain in many parts of the country. now to reframe their objective of so-called liberating the eastern region of dombas is a much more realistic target for russian forces who have suffered huge losses in many areas. but we must remember that it is hard to believe what russia ....

I was there earlier at the start of the invasion, which was, relatively untouched. and now we see it s still being hit today. so i think what s clear is that russian claims could be different from russian actions on the ground. however, one of the reasons we might see this kind of reframing or public messaging coming out of moscow is that it gives sort of saves face and allows the military to come up with a tenable reason to perhaps walk it back to the negotiating table. i don t think that means we re going to see direct talks at any time soon. but it is a reframing to allow for it and, unfortunately, it could mean an intensification of the fighting on the ground. it could mean an intensification of the fighting on the ground, if they were even telling the truth. if not some kind of a head fake. as i look behind me, there is smoke rising and we most definitely did hear some ....
